Here is an article on Harriett Martineau. She is a fascinating woman. Born in Norwich in 1802 with a Unitarianism upbringing, strong minded and rebellious, never married, wrote in a very straight forward manner on such matters as; the poor having too many children that was out growing the food supply, anti-slavery, against strikes, campaigned for better working conditions for women, criticised celebrities including Dickens and Bronte, and used Mesmerism to overcome an ovarian cyst!
